The Childhood Disparities Research Laboratory is focused on investigating the relationship between chronic psychological stress and pediatric obesity, with a specific emphasis on how this relationship differs by race/ethnicity. The lab is studying the various factors that contribute to these differences, including exposure to stressors, social environment perception, coping strategies, biological vulnerability, and the expression of stress as obesity and related metabolic risk factors. Using cross-sectional and longitudinal designs, as well as observational and experimental protocols, the lab is examining the biobehavioral responses in African-American, Latino, and non-Latino white children and adolescents. The ultimate goal is to develop more appropriate strategies to prevent and manage pediatric obesity in multi-ethnic populations, with a focus on stress reduction, physical activity, and diet. The specific goals of the lab are to identify the causes and consequences of pediatric obesity, examine the psychosocial determinants of racial/ethnic differences in obesity-related metabolic risk factors, and use this information to design and implement behavioral interventions to reduce pediatric obesity in multi-ethnic populations.
