The UCLA Meteorite Gallery houses the largest collection of meteorites on the West Coast, with over 2500 samples from about 1500 different meteorites. It is the fifth largest collection in the United States and the second largest housed at a university. The collection includes main masses of about 40 meteorites and type specimens of more than 300 meteorites, with 80 type specimens from California. While some meteorites are exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, most samples are small and mainly used for research. The UCLA Collection of Meteorites is a valuable resource for the study of cosmochemistry, and the cosmochemists at UCLA are among the most productive university researchers in the world. However, UCLA no longer accepts suspected meteorites for identification or verification from the general public.
