The Boston Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for creating and maintaining over 2,300 acres of park land in Boston, including 217 City parks, playgrounds, athletic fields, golf courses, squares, fountains, game courts, cemeteries, urban wilds, and High School Athletic Fields. They also oversee approximately 125,000 trees, with 1,000 acres comprising the historic Emerald Necklace, and more than 35,000 street trees.
