BUILD in Boston is a four-year program that uses entrepreneurship education to engage high school students in academics and college preparation. The program targets under-served communities with high dropout rates, helping students create real businesses through mentorship. Since its founding in 1999, 98% of BUILD’s seniors have graduated from high school and been accepted into college. The nonprofit organization operates in the Bay Area of California, as well as in East Palo Alto, Oakland, Washington DC, New York City, and Boston, serving students who lack motivation and are often considered "trouble-makers" in the classroom. BUILD has had success in other regions and launched its Boston site in 2011, partnering with four schools with the greatest need. More than 90% of BUILD students are low-income, 85% are minority, and 80% will be first generation college students.
