Charles Aguar is recognized as the pioneer of the Oconee Rivers Greenway system, advocating for its creation in the 1970s and witnessing its official ground breaking nearly 30 years later. His legacy is celebrated with a portion of the trail named in his honor. The design of the area near the intersection of Willow Street and East Broad was determined by a competition won by Lea Gardner (MLA). The Charles Aguar Memorial Plaza is situated on Willow Street between East Broad and North Avenue, providing a space for citizens to enjoy recreational amenities while honoring Aguar's dedication to protecting and conserving the rivers of Athens.
